Side Project Summary

The office of the Chief Clerk of the Montana House of Representatives requested a blazer pin be created to commemorate and celebrate the People’s House of Montana.

This pin would be made available for purchase to staff and members of the public who visited the House of Representatives in the Capitol building.

I had never designed a pin before and found the process interesting. I drafted several designs and then sent them to the Pincenter that created the pins. I asked Pincenter's in-house designer to provide me with feedback to tighten the design, which he followed up on. I sent the final design to the office of the Chief Clerk, and the blazer pin design was approved.

Sketched Blazer Pin Ideas

I wanted the blazer pin to be associated with imagery that Montanas could relate to. I drew around ten options that caught my eye.

Researched Image of Pin

I had researched for images that could be placed in the pin as I sketched the designs. The one image that caught my eye was the the Montana State Capitol

Montana State Capitol

I found it on Shutterstock and decided to use it in my designs moving forward.

Overlaid Pin Designs On a Button

I wanted to see the design on a pin but I could only find a button that I could use to overlay the design on.

First attempt to design a pin in Sketch.

I took the sketches and played around in Sketch to get a better feel of what the design could look like on an actual circular pin.

I wanted to see how the design would look on a pin but I could only find a button product on the website Placeit and I pushed the image and design on the button.

Blazer Pin Production

I found a company called Pincenter located in Las Vegas and sent them my design and asked their design team for feedback on my blazer pin.

  • I asked them for feedback to refine the design because I thought it was not quite finished, but not suggest any drastic changes.
  • They are the experts so who better to ask for refinement of my pin idea.

Based on my instructions these are the designs their design team sent back to me.

Official Blazer Pin Product

I choose option B and sent the recommendation to the office of the Chief Clerk. They shared it with the speaker of the house who approved the blazer pin design for the 66th house session.
